Yorkshire Paint Stripping – Terms and Conditions
1. Introduction
Business Details: Yorkshire Paint Stripping (“we” or “us”) is a sole trader business operated from 31 Alexandra Road, Hull, HU5 2NS. We serve customers throughout the UK, providing professional paint stripping services for wood, metal, and other items. All work is carried out in-house at our Hull workshop by our own staff (we do not subcontract any portion of the process). By engaging our services (including sending items to us for stripping or requesting our collection service), you (“the customer”) agree to the following terms and conditions.
Acceptance of Terms: These Terms and Conditions apply to all services provided by Yorkshire Paint Stripping. Proceeding with an order (either by accepting a quote, sending an item to us, or scheduling a collection) indicates that you have read, understood, and agreed to these terms. If you have any questions or need clarification on any term, please contact us before work begins.
2. Services Offered and Process
Scope of Services: We specialize in removing paint, varnish, and other finishes from doors, furniture, radiators, architectural hardware, and similar items. We use a caustic dip tank process for oil-based paints and durable old finishes, and non-caustic stripping methods for water-based paints, acrylic or polyurethane finishes, and other delicate coatings. This combination ensures we choose the safest and most effective method for each item’s finish.
The Stripping Process: In our caustic tank process, items are soaked in a warm solution of sodium hydroxide (“caustic soda”) and then rinsed with hot water to strip away oil-based paints and neutralize the chemicals . This method efficiently removes multiple layers of oil-based or lead-based paint. However, modern water-based or acrylic paints and polyurethane varnishes are not effectively removed by caustic dipping and may require alternative techniques . For such finishes, or very delicate materials, we perform non-caustic stripping – this may involve hand stripping with specialized solvent-based strippers or other gentle methods to ensure the best result without damaging the substrate . We will use our expertise to select the appropriate process based on the information available, but final decisions on method will be at our discretion for the safety of the item.
In-House Work: All stripping work is done on our premises by our trained team. We do not send your items to third parties for processing, ensuring we maintain full control over quality and care. (Note: We do not offer on-site paint stripping at the customer’s location; all items must be brought to our workshop or handled via our collection/delivery service.)
Additional Services: Our service typically returns your item in a stripped state (wood items will be fully stripped of paint/varnish and then rinsed/neutralized). We do not normally perform finishing (such as sanding, waxing, repainting, or varnishing) as part of the standard service unless specifically agreed. If you require additional finishing services, this must be discussed and quoted separately. We can provide basic sanding or neutralizing advice upon request, but any further restoration (staining, polishing, etc.) is the customer’s responsibility unless otherwise stated in writing. We also reserve the right to refuse to strip certain items if we believe the material is unsuitable or the process could cause irreparable damage (we would advise you in such cases).
3. Customer Responsibilities (Preparation of Items)
To ensure a smooth process and avoid avoidable damage, the customer has the following responsibilities before handing over items to us (either via drop-off or collection):
By fulfilling these preparation responsibilities, you help ensure the best possible result and reduce the risk of avoidable damage. Failure to follow the above guidelines may result in suboptimal results or damage for which we cannot accept liability (see Section 5 on Risk and Liability).
4. Collection and Delivery Service
We offer a collection and delivery service for your convenience, subject to scheduling and location:
5. Risk, Liability, and Disclaimers
Inherent Risks: Paint stripping (especially dip-tank caustic stripping) is a process that, while effective, carries inherent risks to the items being treated. By using our service, you acknowledge and accept that there is some risk of damage or unforeseen outcomes. We will take every reasonable care with your goods; however, all items are accepted and processed entirely at the customer’s own risk with regard to any type of damage, loss, or change to the item that may occur during handling, chemical treatment, or in transit . This applies to the entire duration the item is in our custody, as well as to transportation.
We provide the following specific disclaimers and limitations on our liability:
Important: Nothing in these terms seeks to limit or exclude our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or any other liability which cannot be excluded under applicable law. These Terms and Conditions affect only your property (items) and contractual rights. Your statutory rights as a consumer (if applicable) are not affected, except to the extent you have voluntarily accepted the risk and limitations herein.
6. Payment Terms
Pricing: Our pricing for services will either be as per our standard price list or as quoted specifically for your job. All quotes are typically valid for a certain period (e.g., 30 days) and are based on the information you provide about the item (size, condition, number of paint layers, etc.). If upon receiving the item it differs significantly from described (e.g., considerably larger or additional paint layers), we reserve the right to adjust the quote with your agreement before proceeding.
No Deposit (Payment on Completion): We generally do not require any upfront deposit for standard stripping jobs (unless the volume of work is unusually large, in which case a deposit arrangement might be made). Payment in full is due upon completion of the job, meaning once your item has been stripped and is ready for return to you, the balance must be paid. For local customers, payment is typically collected at the time you pick up the item from our workshop or upon delivery back to you (e.g., cash on delivery or immediate bank transfer/mobile payment on delivery). For customers using courier services or where we ship the item back, payment must be received before we dispatch the item for return (we will notify you of completion and provide an invoice so you can pay prior to shipment).
Payment Methods: We accept payment by cash, major credit/debit cards, or bank transfer. (If paying by bank transfer, the payment must clear in our account before item collection or dispatch.) We do not accept personal cheques unless cleared in advance. All prices are in GBP (£). If VAT becomes applicable (e.g., if we become VAT-registered in future), our quotes or prices will specify whether it’s inclusive or plus VAT. Currently, as a small sole trader operation, we are not VAT-registered (so no VAT is charged on our services).
Late Payment / Non-Payment: If you fail to pay upon completion or if a payment method is declined, we reserve the right to retain the item until full payment is made. The ownership of the physical item remains with you, but you agree that we have a lien (a right to hold) on the item for any outstanding charges. If payment is not made promptly, we will contact you for resolution. If an invoice remains unpaid beyond a reasonable time (30 days after completion, absent agreed arrangements), we may begin legal recovery proceedings or ultimately treat the item as abandoned (as detailed in Section 4 on uncollected items), which may result in disposal of the item to recoup costs. Any legal fees or collection costs incurred will be added to the amount due. We also reserve the right to charge interest on overdue amounts at the statutory rate (such as 8% per annum above the Bank of England base rate) as allowed by the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act, or otherwise as per applicable law, from the due date until paid.
Completion and Handover: The job is considered “completed” when the stripping process (and any additional agreed services) have been finished and the item is ready for return. Minor staining or residual paint as described in Section 5 does not mean the job is incomplete; completion is judged by industry standards for stripping. We will inform you when your item is ready and issue a final invoice or receipt. Payment at that point signifies your acceptance that the service was rendered. If you have any complaints or issues with the service, these should be raised before or at the time of payment/collection if possible.
Storage Charges for Uncollected Items
We kindly ask all customers to collect their items promptly once work has been completed, or to arrange delivery within 7 days of notification that the job is finished.
If collection or delivery has not been arranged within this timeframe — or if delivery is attempted and refused or missed without prior notice — we reserve the right to charge a storage fee of £10 per item per week, starting from day 8 after completion.
This charge covers safe handling, secure storage space, and administration. Charges will continue to accrue weekly until the item is collected or successfully delivered. We will make reasonable efforts to contact you using the details provided at the time of booking.
Disposal of Unclaimed Items
If an item remains uncollected and no delivery arrangements are made within 60 days of job completion — despite multiple contact attempts — we reserve the right to consider the goods abandoned under the Torts (Interference with Goods) Act 1977.
At that point, we may proceed with disposal or sale of the item to recover storage costs and losses, after giving one final written warning. Where items must be disposed of, a charge of £500 per tonne (pro-rata) will be applied to cover waste handling, transport, and environmental fees. This amount will be invoiced to the customer and must be settled within 14 days.
We always prefer to return items to their rightful owners and will make every effort to resolve the matter before taking this step.
7. Cancellations and Refund Policy
No Cancellation After Commencement: Once you have agreed to proceed and we have commenced work on your item, you may not cancel the order without charge. Due to the fast turnaround of our service, work often begins very shortly after we receive an item. If you request a cancellation after work has started, we will be unable to halt the process and you will remain liable for the full cost of the service. In practical terms, this means that after your item is in our possession and the stripping process has begun, no refunds will be issued if you change your mind or cancel the service . We also do not accept cancellations at the point of return/delivery (for example, you cannot refuse to take back your stripped item and refuse payment on the basis that you no longer want it stripped).
If you have scheduled a booking and wish to cancel before we have collected or you have delivered the item (i.e., before any work is done), please inform us as soon as possible. We do not charge a fee for cancellations made in good time before work begins. However, if we have already dispatched a driver for collection and you cancel while collection is in progress or at the doorstep, we reserve the right to charge a call-out fee to cover our costs. Any deposit (if one was specifically taken for a large job or special order) would also be non-refundable if you cancel after we have incurred costs or begun work (such as custom chemical orders or commenced stripping).
No Refunds for Completed Services: Because paint stripping is a bespoke service performed on your specific item, we do not offer refunds once the service has been completed, except under extraordinary circumstances or where required by law. In essence, if your item has been stripped as per your request, the service has been rendered and the costs incurred, and we cannot “undo” the labour and chemicals used. Dissatisfaction with the results, where those results are in line with these Terms (e.g., some paint remnants or wood darkening as explained), will not entitle the customer to a refund. We emphasize that many possible undesirable outcomes (stain remains, warping, etc.) are at your risk and have been disclaimed in Section 5, thus a refund will not be given for those reasons. Additionally, we do not refund if you simply change your mind after the fact or decide you no longer want the item stripped.
In the unlikely event that you believe we have not performed the service as agreed (for example, if an item was returned with significant paint remaining that clearly should have been removable, or we stripped the wrong item), please contact us immediately. We will assess on a case-by-case basis. If we find that we did fail to deliver the agreed service or made a mistake, we will first endeavour to correct it (e.g., re-strip the item or address the issue). If a remedy is not possible, a partial refund or other resolution may be offered at our discretion. However, no refund or free re-work will be offered in cases where the outcome is the result of the inherent risks of the process or the nature of the item (for example, wood grain variations, damage due to hidden veneers, etc., as covered in Section 5).
This no-cancellation/no-refund policy is a necessary condition of offering our services, given the irreversible and labour-intensive nature of the process. By proceeding with our service, you acknowledge that you cannot cancel once work starts and that refunds are not provided for completed work , aside from our own errors.
(For consumers: We comply with UK consumer protection laws. Note that “change of mind” cancellations under the Consumer Contracts Regulations (cooling-off period) may not apply to service contracts that have begun with your consent or to bespoke services on goods. If those regulations do apply, you may still be charged for the portion of work completed. This does not affect your statutory rights regarding faulty services.)
8. Miscellaneous Provisions
Damage to Property / Insurance: We have public liability insurance to cover any third-party injuries or property damage caused by our operations (e.g., if our employee accidentally causes a flood or fire on your premises, which is highly unlikely in this line of work). However, when it comes to your own item being worked on, as stated, that item is not covered by our insurance for restoration outcome (it is considered “work in progress” on your property). It is your responsibility to insure your own property/item if you want coverage beyond these terms (for instance, if you have a valuable antique door, consider separate insurance for restoration). By using our service, you agree that any damage to the item itself is subject to the disclaimers above and our limited liability. We will not be liable for any loss of value of the item.
Indemnity: You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Yorkshire Paint Stripping and its owner/staff from any claims or liabilities by third parties arising out of your breach of these terms or misuse of our services. (For example, if you sell the item after stripping and the buyer sues us for some reason that stems from your instructions or representations, you would indemnify us.) This is unlikely, but included for completeness.
Governing Law: These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. If you are a consumer residing in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you may have the right to bring proceedings in your local jurisdiction as well. Any disputes that cannot be amicably resolved will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts (unless a different jurisdiction is required by law for consumer contracts).
Severability: If any provision of these terms is found to be unlawful or unenforceable, that provision will be deemed removed or limited to the minimum extent necessary, and the remainder of the terms will remain fully valid and enforceable.
Changes to Terms: We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms and Conditions from time to time. However, the terms that will apply to your order are those in effect at the time of your booking. We will provide the latest Terms on our website or on request. It is your responsibility to review the Terms periodically, but we will not materially change terms for an ongoing job without informing you.
Entire Agreement: These Terms and Conditions, together with any written quote or job-specific agreement we provide, constitute the entire agreement between you and us regarding the service of paint stripping and supersede any prior discussions or representations. No other understandings, oral or written, shall apply.
Contact Information: For any questions or communications regarding these terms or our services, please contact Yorkshire Paint Stripping at 31 Alexandra Road, Hull, HU5 2NS, or phone [01482-811412], or email [hello@doorstrippingyorkshire.co.uk]. We are always willing to discuss your concerns and aim for customer satisfaction within the bounds of these Terms.
By entrusting your items to Yorkshire Paint Stripping, you confirm that you have read and accepted these Terms and Conditions. We appreciate your business and will do our utmost to deliver a quality service while being transparent about the risks and limitations involved. Thank you for choosing Yorkshire Paint Stripping for your paint removal needs.
