Yorkshire Paint Stripping

Metal Restoration for Gates, Railings, Fencing & Garden Furniture

Professional stripping, rust treatment, priming and respraying for exterior and decorative metalwork. From simple garden gates and benches through to ornate period railings and heritage-style removal and refitting.

Metalwork restored properly

From basic repainting to specialist heritage-style work

Old gates, railings, benches and garden furniture often have years of paint build-up, rust and failed coatings. Painting over the top can look tidy for a short time, but it does not properly deal with the layers underneath.

Our workshop process allows us to remove the old finish, clean and prepare the metalwork, treat corrosion where required, prime correctly and apply a fresh durable finish.

We can work on straightforward modern metalwork as well as more detailed period pieces, including ornate gates and railings set into stone, brick or masonry.

Based in Hull, we provide metal restoration services across Yorkshire and further afield by arrangement. Customers can deliver items to our workshop, arrange courier transport, or ask us to quote for collection, removal and refitting.

We also offer door stripping, furniture stripping and wider paint removal services from our Hull workshop.

We work on:

  • Pedestrian gates and driveway gates
  • Railings and metal fencing
  • Wrought iron and cast iron metalwork
  • Garden benches and bench ends
  • Cast iron tables and chairs
  • Decorative and period-style metalwork
  • Metalwork set into stone or masonry
Our services

Metal restoration services

Gate Restoration

We strip, prepare, prime and respray pedestrian gates, driveway gates and side panels. We can also carry out small repairs, hinge adjustments and refitting where required.

Railing & Fence Renovation

Railings and metal fencing can be removed, stripped back, cleaned, treated and refinished. This is ideal for flaking paint, rust bleed, failed coatings and tired exterior metalwork.

Garden Furniture Restoration

We restore metal garden furniture including cast iron chairs, tables, benches, patio sets and decorative outdoor pieces, giving them a fresh protective finish.

Bench Restoration

Cast iron and steel bench ends can be stripped, cleaned and repainted. We can also advise where new timber slats, fixings or repairs may be needed.

Rust Removal & Treatment

After stripping, any remaining rust or corrosion is mechanically cleaned and treated where required before the correct primer is applied.

Removal & Refitting

Where suitable, we can remove and refit gates and railings, including older metalwork set into masonry using lead, mortar or traditional fixing methods.

Period and heritage-style metalwork

Careful work on older gates, railings and decorative ironwork

Older metalwork is often built and fitted very differently from modern gates and fencing. Railings and gate posts may be set directly into stone or masonry using lead, mortar or older fixing methods.

We have experience removing and refitting this type of metalwork carefully, restoring it off site, then resetting it using suitable modern fixing methods where appropriate.

We can also work with traditional lead-set railings and gates where the metalwork has been fixed directly into stone or masonry. Where suitable, these can be carefully removed, restored off site, and refitted using an appropriate modern fixing method while keeping the appearance sympathetic to the original installation.

Suitable for:

  • Period homes and character properties
  • Stone cottages and boundary walls
  • Traditional railings and ornate gates
  • Decorative scrollwork and finials
  • Cast iron and wrought iron sections
  • Heritage-style renovation projects

For listed buildings or protected properties, customers should check whether consent or permission is required before work begins.

How we do it

Our metal restoration process

Inspection & Quote

Send us photos, sizes and your postcode. We will advise on the best approach and whether removal, transport or refitting is needed.

Removal or Delivery

You can remove and deliver items to us, arrange your own transport, or ask us to quote for removal and collection.

Paint Stripping

Items are stripped in our workshop tanks to remove old layers of paint and failed coatings from the metalwork.

Cleaning & Rust Treatment

The metalwork is rinsed, neutralised where required, dried and prepared. Remaining rust is mechanically cleaned and treated where needed.

Priming

Bare metal is primed using a suitable metal primer or anti-corrosive primer depending on the condition and type of metal.

Respraying & Refitting

The final finish is applied in gloss, satin or eggshell. Where agreed, we can then refit the restored metalwork.

Paint systems

Durable finishes for exterior metalwork

We use quality exterior metal paint systems suitable for gates, railings, fencing, benches and garden furniture.

Depending on the item and the finish required, we can offer heavy-duty gloss, eggshell or other suitable exterior coatings. We can also work with specified colours or designer paint systems where appropriate.

Where a customer wants a particular shade, we can often use a trade paint mixed to a similar RAL or British Standard colour, which can be more practical and cost-effective for exterior metalwork.

Finish options include:

  • Heavy-duty oil-based gloss
  • Heavy-duty oil-based eggshell
  • Rust-inhibiting exterior metal coatings
  • Primer and undercoat systems for bare metal
  • RAL and British Standard colour matching
  • Customer-specified paints where suitable
Why workshop restoration?

Why remove and strip metalwork off site?

We do not usually carry out chemical stripping on site. The best results come from removing the item and processing it properly in our workshop.

Better Paint Removal

Submerging the item allows old coatings to be removed far more thoroughly than basic scraping or on-site painting.

Cleaner Preparation

Once stripped, we can inspect the metal properly, deal with awkward corners and prepare the surface before priming.

Longer Lasting Finish

Proper stripping, cleaning, rust treatment and priming gives the new coating the best chance of lasting.

Questions

Metal restoration FAQs

Can you strip and repaint metal gates?

Yes. We can strip metal gates, prepare the surface, treat rust where needed, prime and respray them in a suitable exterior finish.

Can you restore railings set into stone or masonry?

Yes, where suitable. Older railings and gates are sometimes fixed into stone or masonry using lead, mortar or older methods. We can quote for careful removal and refitting where access and condition allow.

Do you offer on-site stripping?

We do not usually carry out chemical stripping on site. Most metalwork needs to be removed and processed in our workshop tanks for the best result.

Can you restore cast iron garden furniture?

Yes. We can restore cast iron and metal garden furniture including tables, chairs, benches, patio sets and decorative outdoor pieces.

Can you match a specific colour?

Yes. We can often arrange finishes in RAL or British Standard colours. We can also work with specified designer paints where suitable, although for exterior metalwork we may recommend a more durable trade coating.

How long does metal restoration take?

Turnaround depends on the item, condition and paint system, but many smaller gate, railing and garden furniture jobs are completed in around 7–10 days once the items are with us.
