A Hull Workshop Built on Experience, Engineering and Proper Restoration
Yorkshire Paint Stripping started in 1990 as a small family business in Hull, focused mainly on stripping wooden doors.
Today, the business has grown into a modern paint stripping and restoration workshop, offering door stripping, furniture stripping, metal restoration, paint spraying, collection, delivery and specialist work for homeowners, trades and heritage contractors.
From a small door stripping workshop to a modern restoration business
The business began in 1990 as a small family-run operation in Hull, specialising in stripping painted wooden doors.
For more than 30 years, it built a reputation for practical, reliable door stripping work. By 2023, the founding owner was ready to retire, and we took the business on with the aim of protecting what made it successful while improving the way it worked.
We moved the business into more suitable premises at Alexandra Road in Hull, modernised the workshop, improved processes and expanded the services available to customers.
Revealing hidden beauty since 1990
Our job is not just to remove paint. It is to reveal what is underneath, assess the real condition of the timber or metal, and prepare each item properly for its next life.
Whether it is a Victorian door, a pine chest, a garden gate, heritage joinery, antique furniture or architectural metalwork, the same principle applies: remove what is failing, preserve what is good, and prepare it properly.
Our story
The business begins
Yorkshire Paint Stripping began as a small family business in Hull, originally focused on stripping wooden doors for local homeowners and trades.
A trusted local service
Over the following decades, the workshop built a reputation for practical paint stripping, reliable service and restoring original doors instead of replacing them.
A new chapter
When the founding owner wanted to retire, we bought the business, moved it to a more suitable premises and began modernising the process while keeping the original craft alive.
More services, better systems and larger projects
Today, the business offers door stripping, furniture stripping, metal restoration, paint spraying, collection and delivery, refitting options and specialist work for trade, commercial and heritage clients.
What changed under new ownership?
As an engineer and now the owner of the business, the focus has been on improving the parts of the trade that customers do not always see — the chemistry, safety systems, handling process, efficiency and finish preparation.
Paint stripping is a traditional trade, but it still needs modern thinking. Better systems mean more consistent results, safer handling, quicker turnaround and clearer communication for customers.
More than door stripping
Door stripping is still a core part of what we do, but the workshop now handles a much wider range of restoration work.
We added metalwork restoration and paint spraying after bringing in a time-served fabricator, allowing us to strip, repair, prepare and refinish gates, railings, garden furniture and other metal items properly.

We work for domestic customers restoring original features, trades who need reliable workshop support, and professional contractors delivering larger renovation or conservation projects.
Since modernising the business, we have worked hard to grow repeat trade, improve documentation, strengthen processes and meet the standards needed for work with local authorities, schools, medical practices, charities and professional heritage organisations.
Our project experience includes everyday door and furniture stripping as well as larger heritage-style work, including major doors, timber boards, railings and specialist items where careful handling and preparation matter.
Why our approach is different
A lot of paint stripping businesses still operate the same way they did decades ago. We believe the traditional skill matters, but the process around it should be better.
That means better communication, safer handling, clearer pricing, improved chemistry control, professional equipment, collection options, stronger trade relationships and realistic advice before the work starts.
We focus on the whole customer experience
Customers want to know what the job will cost, what result is realistic, how long it will take, how items will be handled, and what needs to happen after stripping.
That is why we have added clearer pricing, online information, project write-ups, FAQs, collection and delivery routes, and a more complete workshop service.
What we believe
Restoring original materials is often better than replacing them. Old timber, old ironwork and period details have a quality that modern replacements often struggle to match.
We believe in preserving what is worth saving, being honest about what is realistic, and giving customers the information they need before spending money.
Based in Hull, working across Yorkshire and beyond
Our workshop is based at 31 Alexandra Road, Hull, HU5 2NS. From there, we serve customers across Hull, East Yorkshire, wider Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and further afield for larger or specialist projects.
Collection and delivery are available for many jobs, which is especially useful for heavy doors, full-house door batches, large furniture, gates, railings and awkward restoration items.
Want to know whether your item is worth restoring?
Send photos of the door, furniture, gate, railing or item you want stripping. Include rough measurements, your postcode and whether you need collection or delivery.
We will advise what method is likely to be suitable, what result is realistic and what the next steps should be.
