Restoring original ironwork instead of replacing it

Original railings, gates and boundary fencing can be one of the most characterful features of an older property. The challenge is that age, weather and years of overpainting can leave them looking beyond repair.

Over time, traditional ironwork can suffer from heavy paint build-up, flaking coatings, deep corrosion around joints and fixings, rust where the railings enter the stone, seized or worn gate fittings, and failed leaded fixings in stone cappings and pillars.

In this West Yorkshire project, the existing railings and gates showed all the classic signs of age and exposure. Paint was badly peeling, rust was visible in multiple areas, and the fixing points where the metal met the stone had clearly deteriorated.

Like many traditional installations, the ironwork had been fixed into the stonework using lead. This is a method that needs care, experience and the right approach if the original stone is to be preserved.

Careful removal using traditional methods

Because the railings were leaded into stone capping, this was not a case of simply cutting everything out and starting again. The aim was to save the original ironwork, preserve the look of the property, and remove each section as carefully as possible without causing unnecessary damage to the surrounding stone pillars and coping stones.

We carefully removed the railings and gates using traditional methods suited to old ironwork, taking the time to free the sections properly rather than forcing them out.

Rushed work can easily crack stone, distort the railings, or destroy original details that cannot be replaced.

Stripping and restoring the original railings and gates

Once removed, the railings and gates were taken through the restoration process to bring them back to sound condition.

This included stripping away the old failing coatings and exposing the metal underneath so that problem areas could be properly assessed.

On jobs like this, removing layers of old paint is essential, because hidden corrosion often sits beneath years of patch repairs and overpainting. After stripping, the metalwork can be restored properly rather than just covered up.

On this project, the result was a full restoration of the original metal railings, matching gate sections and associated ironwork, ready for refitting.

Refitting with a modern epoxy fixing system

While we respect traditional methods, we also use modern materials where they offer a clear improvement in durability and performance.

After restoration, the railings and gates were refitted using a modern epoxy resin fixing solution rather than being reinstalled exactly as before.

This gives a secure, reliable fixing method that is better suited to long-term performance while still allowing the original railings and gates to remain part of the property.

Why so many companies refused the job

We often hear from customers who have been told their railings are “too awkward”, “too old”, or “not worth doing”.

Usually, that comes down to one thing: specialist restoration work is very different from general fabrication or standard gate installation.
