A Long-Running Yorkshire Workshop Built on Heritage, Craftsmanship & Proper Local Values

Long before strippaint.co.uk existed — before social media, online reviews or nationwide delivery — there was a small Yorkshire workshop quietly dipping doors for homeowners, joiners and builders across Hull and the surrounding region.

The business began over 50 years ago, working from a modest site in Bilton, and quickly earned a reputation for doing one thing exceptionally well:

👉 Stripping thick layers of paint from doors and furniture and revealing the beautiful timber beneath.

It didn’t need fancy branding or marketing. It grew the traditional Yorkshire way —
through graft, skill, word of mouth and a promise to do the job right.

The Door Stripping Yorkshire Era

For many years the workshop traded as Door Stripping Yorkshire, known by thousands of local customers who brought their:

  • Victorian 4-panel pine doors
  • 1930s solid timber doors
  • Tables, chairs, bannisters & furniture
  • Cast iron items and metal hardware

People from Leeds, York, Hull, Beverley and further afield all made the journey to drop off their items. If you ever delivered a door to Bilton, or saw the Door Stripping Yorkshire name online, you were dealing with the same workshop that still exists today — the same tanks, the same process, the same hands-on craft.

2023: The Founder Retires — And a New Chapter Begins

In 2023, after decades of running the business the old-fashioned, hands-on way, the founder finally retired.

Rather than allow a well-known Yorkshire business to fade away, new owners stepped in with a clear vision:

🔥 Preserve the heritage
🔥 Modernise the customer experience
🔥 Grow the brand while keeping its Yorkshire identity

This marked the evolution from DoorStrippingYorkshire.co.uk to the new brand:
Yorkshire Paint Stripping, using the modern website strippaint.co.uk.

At the same time, the workshop relocated from Bilton to a more practical and accessible premises at:

🏠 31 Alexandra Road, Hull

This became the new headquarters for the next generation of the business.

What Changed — And What Stayed Exactly the Same

What Stayed the Same

  • The traditional dipping methods perfected over decades
  • The expertise in handling timber, metal and vintage items
  • The Yorkshire working values — honesty, fairness, straightforward pricing
  • The belief that you don’t throw good things away; you restore them properly

What Changed

  • A cleaner, faster website with transparent pricing
  • A wider range of services
  • Collection & delivery across Yorkshire and beyond
  • Restoration of metal railings, hardware and furniture, not just doors
  • Modern communication, updates and customer service

The goal was never to “replace” the original workshop —
but to carry it forward into the next 50 years.

Why the New Name Matters

The old name reflected a time when door dipping was the bulk of the work.

Today?

We strip and restore:

  • Internal & external timber doors
  • Furniture
  • Metal gates & railings
  • Vintage ironmongery
  • Architectural salvage
  • Radiators
  • Hardware & fittings

The new name reflects the broader expertise while staying rooted in Yorkshire heritage.

But the values underneath the new branding remain completely unchanged:

✔ “Do it once, do it right.”

✔ “Say the price and stick to it.”

✔ “Restore it properly, don’t cut corners.”

These are the values that kept the business going for decades before new ownership —
and the values that will carry it forward for decades more.

A Yorkshire Business Through and Through

The workshop may now sit proudly at 31 Alexandra Road, Hull, but the spirit is the same as the day it opened in Bilton.

We still welcome customers dropping in with:

  • Heavy old doors they pulled out of a skip
  • A Victorian lock they want to save
  • A wardrobe or table they want brought back to life
  • Items their parents or grandparents owned
  • Whole-house restoration projects

We still restore what people thought was “too far gone.”
We still bring old timber back to its natural beauty.
We still believe in Yorkshire workmanship — solid, honest, reliable.
