Furniture Stripping for Antique, Vintage and Modern Wooden Furniture

Good furniture is often hidden under years of paint, varnish, wax, stain, lacquer or modern decorative coatings.

Chairs and wardrobes are among the most common items we strip, but we also work on tables, cabinets, drawers, sideboards, cupboard doors, garden furniture, benches, architectural pieces and unusual restoration projects.

The key is choosing the right stripping method for the item. A pine chair with old gloss paint is not the same as a modern painted wardrobe, a waxed farmhouse table or a delicate veneered cabinet.

We assess the coating, timber, construction and condition before choosing the safest and most effective stripping method.

Chair Stripping

Chairs often have paint trapped around spindles, legs, rails and joints. Professional stripping reaches the areas that sanding and scraping usually miss.

Wardrobe Stripping

Wardrobes can be heavy, awkward and built from mixed materials, so careful assessment is important before stripping, sanding or refinishing.

Tables and Tops

Dining tables, side tables and farmhouse tables can be stripped back to reveal grain, colour and wear that has been hidden under old coatings.

Drawers and Cabinets

Chests of drawers, cupboards, cabinets and sideboards can often be transformed once old paint, varnish and wax are removed.

Garden Furniture

Wooden garden furniture can be stripped of failing paint or coatings before being prepared for a suitable exterior finish.

Unusual Items

We also strip architectural pieces, panels, carved timber, small doors, shelves, boxes, benches and other painted wooden items.

Why furniture stripping needs the right process

Not all furniture can be treated the same way. Some items are solid pine or oak and strip very well. Others may include veneer, glue blocks, old repairs, filler, mixed timber, water-based paint or factory-applied lacquer.

A professional workshop approach helps avoid patchy results, unnecessary scraping, damage to details or the wrong method being used on the wrong item.

What coatings can we remove?

Furniture can arrive with all kinds of finishes, especially older pieces that have been repainted several times.

Traditional oil-based gloss
Old varnish and stained finishes
Wax and furniture polish build-up
Shellac and older finishes
Modern water-based paints
Chalk paint and upcycling coatings
Lacquer and factory finishes
Multiple layers of unknown paint
Oil-based coatings often respond well to caustic stripping. Some modern coatings, water-based paints and chalk paints may need a different specialist process.
1

Send photos and details

Send clear photos of the furniture from all sides, including close-ups of carvings, joints, damage, veneer, drawers, handles, legs and any awkward areas.

It also helps to include rough measurements, your postcode and whether you need collection or delivery.

2

We assess the item and coating

We look at the type of furniture, the likely coating, whether the item is solid timber or veneered, and whether there are signs of damage, loose joints, old repairs or delicate details.

This helps us advise whether caustic stripping, hand stripping, solvent-based stripping or another method is most suitable.

3

The furniture is stripped in the workshop

Once booked in, the item is stripped using the agreed method. Paint, varnish, wax or coating build-up is removed as far as practical, including around mouldings, carvings, turned legs and detailed areas.

The aim is to return the furniture to a clean, honest base ready for the next stage of restoration.

4

Cleaning, drying and preparation

After stripping, the item is cleaned, neutralised where required, dried properly and inspected before being returned or moved on to sanding, waxing, staining, painting or repairs.

Drying is especially important before finishing, as trapped moisture can affect paint, wax, oil or stain.

What happens after stripping?

Once stripped, furniture can be taken in several directions depending on the look you want and the condition of the timber.

Light sanding
Waxing
Oiling
Staining
Repainting
Repairs and timber patching
Hardware cleaning or replacement
Advice on finishing products
Many customers plan to repaint until they see the timber underneath. Once the grain is revealed, a natural waxed or oiled finish often becomes the better choice.

Why customers choose furniture stripping instead of replacing

Older furniture is often better made than people realise. A painted wardrobe, chair or table may look tired, but beneath the coating there may be solid timber, good joinery and character that modern replacements struggle to match.

Keeps original solid timber
Reveals grain and character
Can be cheaper than buying quality replacements
Preserves sentimental or antique pieces
Gives old furniture a new life
Reduces waste and avoids unnecessary replacement

Collection and delivery for larger furniture

Chairs and smaller pieces can often be dropped off at the workshop, but wardrobes, tables, cabinets and larger furniture may need collection and careful handling.

We offer collection and delivery across Hull, East Yorkshire, wider Yorkshire and further afield by arrangement, depending on size, weight, access and route.
