Our history & values

A Long-Running Yorkshire Workshop Built on Heritage, Craftsmanship & Proper Local Values

Long before strippaint.co.uk existed — before social media, online reviews or nationwide delivery — there was a small Yorkshire workshop quietly dipping doors for homeowners, joiners and builders across Hull and the surrounding region.

What started as a traditional door stripping workshop has grown into Yorkshire Paint Stripping: a modern service built on old-school Yorkshire values.

From a small Yorkshire workshop to a modern restoration service

The business began over 50 years ago, working from a modest site in Bilton, and quickly earned a reputation for doing one thing exceptionally well.

Stripping thick layers of paint from doors and furniture and revealing the beautiful timber beneath.

It did not need fancy branding or marketing. It grew the traditional Yorkshire way — through graft, skill, word of mouth and a promise to do the job right.

The Door Stripping Yorkshire era

For many years the workshop traded as Door Stripping Yorkshire, known by thousands of local customers who brought their doors, furniture and restoration items to the workshop.

Customers came from Leeds, York, Hull, Beverley and further afield, often making the journey because they knew the workshop had the experience to deal with old paint, timber and traditional materials properly.

Victorian 4-panel pine doors
1930s solid timber doors
Tables, chairs, bannisters and furniture
Cast iron items and metal hardware

If you ever delivered a door to Bilton, or saw the Door Stripping Yorkshire name online, you were dealing with the same workshop tradition that still continues today — the same process, the same hands-on craft and the same belief in restoring things properly.

2023: The founder retires and a new chapter begins

In 2023, after decades of running the business the old-fashioned, hands-on way, the founder finally retired.

Rather than allow a well-known Yorkshire business to fade away, new owners stepped in with a clear vision: preserve the heritage, modernise the customer experience, and grow the brand while keeping its Yorkshire identity.

From Door Stripping Yorkshire to Yorkshire Paint Stripping

This marked the evolution from DoorStrippingYorkshire.co.uk to the new brand: Yorkshire Paint Stripping, using the modern website strippaint.co.uk.

At the same time, the workshop relocated from Bilton to a more practical and accessible premises at:

31 Alexandra Road, Hull

This became the new headquarters for the next generation of the business.

What changed — and what stayed exactly the same

What stayed the same

Traditional dipping methods perfected over decades
Expertise in handling timber, metal and vintage items
Yorkshire working values: honesty, fairness and straightforward pricing
The belief that you do not throw good things away; you restore them properly

What changed

A cleaner, faster website with transparent pricing
A wider range of services
Collection and delivery across Yorkshire and beyond
Restoration of metal railings, hardware and furniture, not just doors
Modern communication, updates and customer service
The goal was never to replace the original workshop — but to carry it forward into the next 50 years.

Why the new name matters

The old name reflected a time when door dipping was the bulk of the work. Today, the business has grown into a broader paint stripping and restoration service.

Internal and external timber doors
Furniture
Metal gates and railings
Vintage ironmongery
Architectural salvage
Radiators
Hardware and fittings
Specialist restoration pieces

The new name reflects the broader expertise while staying rooted in Yorkshire heritage.

The values underneath the new branding remain completely unchanged: do it once, do it right; say the price and stick to it; restore it properly, do not cut corners.

A Yorkshire business through and through

The workshop may now sit proudly at 31 Alexandra Road, Hull, but the spirit is the same as the day it opened in Bilton.

We still welcome customers dropping in with heavy old doors, Victorian locks, wardrobes, tables, family pieces, whole-house restoration projects and items they thought might be too far gone.

Heavy old doors pulled out of a skip
Victorian locks and fittings worth saving
Wardrobes, tables and furniture brought back to life
Items owned by parents or grandparents
Whole-house restoration projects
Old timber and metalwork with character

We still restore what people thought was too far gone. We still bring old timber back to its natural beauty. We still believe in Yorkshire workmanship — solid, honest and reliable.
